I led a group of 15 on a Sierra Club Basecamp Trip Aug 10-17 2008. Fished a bit Aug 12-16 at 10,700 in the Humphreys Basin (above Bishop, CA) lakes and creeks. Caught & released limits easily each day fishing a few minutes/hours a day. Most on small spinners (Meps, Panther Martins (black, gold & silver), Kastmasters in gold & silver), some fly fishing (most caddis dry flies, one on a Zug Bug nymph. Beautiful scenery. Largest Golden went 10.

I took my good friend, building contractor and slow-pitch baseball player Bill Bushey out bait fishing for stripers or anything that bites yesterday. We wanted to fish down by light #5 but there was a wind right up the alley of the Sacto River near Sherman Lake causing big waves, so we fished near the power lines. We only caught 5 legal fish. I got one 19" striper and one catfish. I also caught 2 Sacto Pikes. Bill only caught 3 catfish. We also caught about 25 underize stripers. From now on I'm gonna fish with shad or anchovies. I ain't gonna use those stinky sardines that get my boat smelly and filthy. Next week I'll be back after largemouths until Sept when the stripers are jumpin' in the boats. Good fishin! Jerry

THURSDAY AUGUST 14th...............BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS!!!!! On this day, took my Bass buddy Mike Booker out chasing down summer stripers..Unlike last week, we had a fuller moon & without a doubt, bigger tides..Don't care how hot the temps are, when you are getting bit, and catching fish you don't have time to think about the constant sweat running down your face. On this day we had twenty or more hookups bringing 15 to the boat and NOT FISH FISH THAT WENT OVER FIVE POUNDS!!!!! Don't know if the bigger fish took the day off or moved? We found the best bite inside Decker Island in the 6-8 foot range just at the start of the incoming tide...If you didn't hook up, they simply ripped you trick tail off your YO-ZURI ! THE SURE SIGNS OF SMALL FISH! Fished just next to RON RETZLAFF who was in his buddies boat..Same thing for these guys...SMALL FISH!..Did manage to get one fish over ten pounds...A 13 POUND CARP WHICH I SNAGGED & BROUGHT IN BACKWARDS!! Don't know how my hooks penetrated through those hugh scales? After devoting some 9 hours of shallow trolling & not getting one fish that was worthy, we decided to finish the day back in Steamboat throwing Swimbaits & Brushogs for some blackbass...While Mike picked a few up to 2 1/2 pounds all I could manage was one smallmouth that didn't make a pound!..SUMMARY; I failed to find those 6 to 10 pounders which were just about everywhere just last week. We gave it our best shot and thats all you can do...Better days ahead, Thanks for hanging in there Mike, enjoyed your company as always...See you on the water...Naked...

SUNDAY AUGUST 10th........................SOFT TIDES EQUAL HARD HITS.......Incoming tide....Two feet two inches....Outgoing....One foot one inch....Had to double check my tidebook just to make sure I read it right! Had my son in law Gabe with me as we launched at Hogback at about 9:00am, a late start for sure. Would be working the income till about three pm. Used the clown colored Yo-Zuries once again....Found fish just about everywhere but the Westbank...Looks like they are dredging that area just below Sandy's beach & have the water discolored....We did pretty well inside Decker but most fish were cookie-cutters in the 3-4 pound class...Around noon I get a call from my wife advising me that Tom Ramage is on the water & is trying to locate us. Making contact with Tom I tell him we are getting bit in Decker and would join him as soon as our bite quits or we can't find bigger fish...Well, the bite continued on but the fish remained on the small size!. Pulled out and met Tom upstream above the Rio Vista bridge...They had picked up 8 fish but nothing big...We both continued to pick up fish at a moderate pace right up to the top of the tide then it really slowed down...Keep in mind the outgoing tide was only a one footer!!! But, on this day, thats what Mr. Striper wanted....The fish jumped up in size from dinks to the almost twenty pound class as Tom got an 18 pounder & I got a 17 pounder....Must have been bigger fish as I had two others come unbutton after taking long runs...Ended the day back in Steamboat and found fish to ten pounds in the lower end.....As we headed towards the barn ( Hogback) our fish count was 32 for us and 23 for them...Not bad for summer run stripes...Keep in mind many of the fish were on the small size mixed with the larger ones...Observed very little boat traffic trolling as other boats were on anchor bait fishing...Another unexpected good day in the delta with wimp tides!!! See ya on the water....Naked.....P.S. Nice hooking up with you Tom.....

Bill Crooks and I devoted 3 hours, 20 miles for 5 legals (15#, 11#, 6#, 5#, 4#, 1 undersized, lost none, lost 2-3 tails). Shallow (6-7) trolled the incoming tide at 4.25-4.75 mph 140 back. We worked the Sac R and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. Water 71.8-72.4*, semi-clear to clear. Air 50-75*. Sky clear. Wind 4-8 mph. A short day as my steering went out, we decided to troll back to Hogback before it froze up on us. I'll be in the Sierra, Humphreys Basin, for 8 days day-hiking and trying for 18-19" Golden Trout (California's State Fish). Starcraft should be fixed by the time I return. Thanks for the company Bill, good going on that 15#er!

WEDS AUGUST 6th..............................THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME......After spending the past month bassing in the East delta, decided it was time to return to my backyard, the north delta....This week my wife Sandra reminded me that it had been more than two months since I had taken her out .....I said" OK lets hit it on Wednesday......THE REPORT.........After briefly checking the days tides, it looked like a fairly good day to troll if we could find the fish...High tide was around 9:30 am and low was late in the afternoon..Both under three feet...After launching out of Hogback and still an hour away from the high slack tide, started shallow trolling in lower Steamboat....Went with brand new Yo-zuries as my spring run lures had many battle scars from the great fishing back in March & April...On this day we only used two colors...Red head & the clown .....Fished for more than an hour without a bump and just like clockwork as the tide turned, we got into fish, mostly dinks, but a few to 3-4 lbs...For the record, all of our fishing was done above the Rio Vista bridge and the Old Sac river area...Almost the same trolling pattern as in the spring....It seems the fish were pretty much scattered but when we found a school the action was enough to keep you in the ballgame ...By noon our numbers were in the twenty's with not one fish over 7 pounds!! Then we ran into my old buddy Mark Wilson...While my wife & myself were happy getting bit at a pretty good rate, Mark is always good about giving advice and when he does, I listen! He tells me to try another location where he has been getting bigger fish not far away.....BINGO!! Just like that, we are into larger fish up to 13 pounds..Thanks Mark...We also ran into Clyde Wands who had his grandson with him.....As you would expect, the youngster is doing well fishing with his Famous Grandfather!! The bite continues right to the bottom of the outgo & when the tide turns around on the income ( 4:30 pm.) We got blitzed for about an hour with many double hookups!! Many of these stripes caught late were in the 9-11 pound bracket...Then the winds picked up and white-capped the water.....Ran back into Steamboat to get out of the two foot waves heading for the ramp...Picked up two more fish before calling it a day....SUMMARY: Total fish caught..33 stripes....largest...13 pounds...8 between 9 & 11 pounds....many 3-5 pounders...Did find a TAG on one of the 5 pounders & will turn it in to Fish & Game soon...A mixed bag of stripers as some were very fresh looking and some had been the system awhile & very dingy looking....While I always expect to catch fish even in the summer months, did not think we would have a 30 plus day! Released all fish but one as it was morality wounded with gill damage...Gotta love the North Delta...See ya on the water..Naked.

Took my neighbor, Gordon Gage, and my lucky dog, Spike, out for summer striped bass. 4.5 hours, 26 miles. 3 legals (14#/32, released, 5#/22, 5#/22), 2 undersized, lost none. Shallow (6-7) trolled at 4.25-4.75 mph 140 back the Sac R and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. Water 73.4*, semi-clear. Air 80-95*. Sky clear. Wind 2-6 mph (almost no wind). In at 10:50 a.m., out at 3 p.m. Not the best tides, moon phase but a beautiful, quiet summer day on the Delta. Our best action was during the first 2 hours of the incoming tide. I hope you enjoyed your first striper outing Gordon, thanks for the company. Good going Spike!

Steve Murakami joined me and my lucky dog, Spike, for the day. 4.5 hours, 15 miles. 6 Kokanee (16, 17, 17+, 15, 17). Lost none! Had 2 hits/no stick. We launched at Capell Cove. Were in off the Ranch House at 7:30 a.m., headed in at 1:00 p.m. Water 76.4-78.5*, clear to 11. Air 65-85*. Sky overcast early, clear later. Wind 0-8 mph. We pretty much fished the East shore in 100 of water, North of the Ranch House. We did not get a bite until 9:00, a fish until 9:25. 5 of the six we got were on a copper 4/0 dodger and pink RGT double hook rig with garlic scented Shoepeg white corn. 5 of 6 were at 50, 1 at 60. Speed around 1.0-1.2 mph (ground speed). We put Krill gel on our downrigger balls & dodgers. Set backs 20-30. We were pleased we were not skunked, with the size of the Kokanee. 2-3 of the larger ones took quite a bit of line, several times before we got them in. 3-5 other boats on the water, very little radio traffic, saw nets out a few times. Thanks for the companionship Steve, a really enjoyable day, glad you could make it out.

MONDAY JULY 28th...........................BRIAN ARIMOTO joined me for a days fishing the East Delta.....On this day, the weather was perfect in the morning hours with just light breezes...After launching at Kings ( 7:00am.) the air temps were on the cool side at about 57 degrees and the water very serene with just a slight ripple. The bottom of the outgoing tide a 4 footer was at 10:45 am...We started off using Senko's, Brian went with a 5 inch & I went with a 6 incher.....Well, Brian's 5 incher got the fishes attention much better than mine as he picked up 4 fish to my one in about half an hour! The fourth, a nice fat Five pounder!!! We were fishing in the main deep water channel by light 13....As we approached the bottom of the tide, the bites pretty much quit, so we decided to try Columbia cut where I did well on my last outing....Fished that whole cut and only picked up one fish....Tried drop-shotting & brushhogs with half oz. weights...SLOW!! Time to move again...Headed for Mildred Island & fished the south end...Brian picks up fish number 6 & loses a few using a weighted brushhog,,,I can't seem to get bit so switch over to a drop/ shot with a 7 inch Robo..After many casts, I catch my second fish of the day....Brian is now using a topwater frog and gets one blowup and misses the hookup!...Its now mid-day and time to eat lunch..The wind is now picking up and hard to hold the boat in Mildred so we move back into the many cuts entering this area,,,,Very slow!! The wind is now a major factor as we can't find protection for boat control....Returned to the deepwater channel and the many islands connected and found a little less winds....I pick up two more small fish and we decide to call it a day as the winds are relentless and the conditions are poor....Total fish caught....4 for me & 8 for Brian..A very slow day with one or two decent fish...Just like Striper fishing, some days the fish will humble you and on this day it was just TOUGH fishing....Always have fun fishing with you Brain, lets do it again soon....My Buds in the north delta are telling me the stripes are picking up so maybe I'll try that soon? See ya on the water...Naked..

First let me say a big thanks to J Lopes who operates Righthook Sportfishing. My dad and brother went with me on this trip. Between the 3 of us we have over 120 years of fishing experience so we thought we knew how to fish, and catching some halibuit would be easy. We met J at Berkley ramp at 6:00, went to the bait receiver and got some live bait. our first stop proved we didn't know as much about catching fish as we thought. J put us on fish but we lost one Halibuit and missed all the rest. J was patient and kept telling us what to do, but those combined years of bad habits made it hard for us to listen. We made several other stops and listened to J and managed to catch 3 limits of Halibuit to 25.8 lbs and 2 striped bass! J has a lot of knowlege to share. anyone interested in fishing with a real pro I recomend him. his number is 916-417-5670 Thanks J for a 1st class trip,

My lucky dog Spike & I went out for summer stripers. 8 hours, 50 miles. 6 legals (16#, 10#, 5#, 20, 19, 18), 2 undersized, lost 2, lost 2-3 tails. The 10 & 5#ers were a double (my first solo)! Deep trolled (14-18) 2.25 mph 65-90 back, shallow (6-8') trolled at 4.25-4.75 mph 140 back the Sac R and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. Water 72-74*, semi-clear to clear. Air 60-92*. Sky night to clear. Wind 0-12 mph (2-6 mph most of the time). The water had cleared up a bit. As I was fishing a rising tide, slack & beginning of the outgoing tides I used B16s. Caught all of the fish on Rainbow, Red Head & Pearl. A Red Head Yo-Zuri got a 4# Squaw Fish! A long but one of my better days this year.

Columbia "Buoy Ten" Fall Chinook Fishing!!! August means Fall Chinook. With the end of Summer Steelhead season, comes Fall King fishing on the Columbia, better known as Buoy Ten. Beginning the first week of August, Approximately 376,800 fall chinook salmon are expected to return to the Columbia River at Astoria Oregon - up from 219,600 fish last year. This year's fishery should benefit from an estimated return of 86,200 upriver bright kings (URB's) - up from 14,600 last year - bound for the Spring Creek hatchery above Bonneville Dam. With water temps in the high 60's, these fish will come in and out of the Columbia river with the tides. We are going to target these fish out of the Warrenton Marina this year in the calm waters around the Astoria bridge both on the Washington and Oregon side of the river. The famous "Church Hole" and "Shipwreck" will produce limits of King Salmon. Trolling is the name of the game here. Using 10'6" mooching rods from Fetha-Styx, level wind Shimano Bantam 50 reels loaded with braided line, we will troll the Delta Diver Fish Flash combo along with various spinners and cut-plug herring. Most of the fish will average 20 to 35 pounds with fish caught up to 50 pounds every season. We average 4 to 6 King salmon a day with limits of Coho being caught in late August into September. We are currently taking reservations for fishing trips at Buoy Ten on the Columbia river. We will be fishing from a large and roomy 25 foot Alumaweld Super Vee with a 200hp Yamaha Outboard. Prime dates are available from August 20th thru September 10th. Catch rates, fishing reports, and fishing reservations may be obtained online at http://www.columbia-river-fishing-guide.com or by phone at (206)-920-2428. Also I have started an on-line travel company. Please take a look next time you're booking travel for a fishing trip with J and L Guided Sportfishing, ( aifare, hotels, rental vehicles) and if I'm the same or less, I would appreciate you booking with White River Travel rather than Expedia or Travelocity.

WEDS JULY 23rd..............................BASS MARATHON SOLO...........Twelve hours of bassing & exploring the many islands & cuts that seem to never end and using just a delta map as my hand held GPS batteries went dead!! But, even using visual land marks can be confusing as you are constantly changing directions and I found myself going in circles! Through trial & error I did find some of the water that I fished with my Coach / Guide Mike Booker which made me feel more comfortable....My main goal on this day was to learn this part of the delta and what a better way to do it being by yourself....THE REPORT........After launching at Kings Marina ( 6:45 am.) headed down Disappointment slough and looked for some fishy water which is everywhere...High tide was about an hour away and didn't expect to get bit till the start of the outgo...My three rods were set up for Senko, Brush hogs, & drop/shotting....Went with 6 inch red/black worms on the high tide and got bit very quickly...Two dinks & one 3 pounder...At the start of the outgo things got even better as I picked up 6 more fish to 4 pounds.....For some reason on this day, the fish were brutal on my Senko's tearing them up badly!...In an hour I went through a whole pack...Just as I got on a roll fishing the outgoing tide, about half way out the bite died!!!! Nothing touched my worms! Good time to eat my lunch and re think the situation.....Its now in the heat of the day and the tide has gone out a good three feet exposing much of the green grass (weeds) along the banks...Switched over to my brushhogs with a fixed 1/2 oz bullet weight and focused on the front part of the weeds.....BINGO!!! Got the biggest fish of the day....4.5 pounds!! Stayed with the brushhog till the bottom of the tide picking up 5 more fish to 3 pounds...Its now 4:00 pm and the tide is slowly coming back in..Went to my drop/shot rig with 1/2 oz lead & 7 inch purple Robo worms...Did well, but no fish bigger than two pounds....Its now 7:30pm and I'm beat...Covered a lot of water on this day but failed to make it to Mildred Island as I couldn't find it!!! Total fish caught was 21 bass with two 4 pounders and three 3 pounders...I was surprised how my Jetcraft non bass boat handled through out the day ...Not as good as a Real bass boat but it worked...A fun day on this part of the delta as I'm still learning...See ya on the water....Naked...

I had a rare opportunity to go night fishing (90 minutes of night, 7.5 hours of day-light) with two of the Delta's most experienced striper chasers, Bill Crooks and "Old Man River" Clyde Wands. 9 hours, 30 miles. 5 legals to 8#. Shallow and deep trolled (Yo-Zuri Fire Tiger, Mackerel, Clown, Charteuse/Black Spots, Rainbow Trout at 2.25-3.25 mph 65-90 back deep (14-18) trolling, 4.25-4.75 mph shallow (6-8) trolling 140 back). Most, largest fish caught deep. We trolled the Sac R and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. Water 73-75*, semi-clear to clear. Air 60-85*. Sky dark to clear. Wind 0-5 mph. We fished the end of the 4.8 incoming tide, the slack, all of -0.2 incoming tide. Cache Slough very dirty. A slow but great day with two great Delta fishermen, I learned a lot, enjoyed great company. Thanks for the invite Bill.

Shallow trolled (Yo-Zuri Red Head & Rainbow Trout at 4.25-4.75 mph 140 back) the Sac R and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. Water 75*, semi-clear to dirty. Air 70-82*. Sky clear. Wind 6-12 mph. I fished the end of the 4.8 outgoing tide, the slack and the first hour and a half of the -0.2 incoming tide. Cache Slough very dirty. Another tough day for me. Bill Crooks invited me to join him for the SIRS/Jolly Hookers Derby, 12 boats, 25 fishermen. 6 hours, 18 miles. Tough day, less than a fish a rod. We launched at Markley Cove. We look for fish off the bank East of Skiers Cove. Nothing. 7:00 in off Big Island. Water 76*, clear; air 60-85*; sky clear; wind 0-4 mph. We saw fish on the fishfinder at 40-70', several looking at our offerings, very few takes. Bill got one bite, Guy a take, lost it at 62down. Bill got a small Kokanee and small Rainbow, all our hits/Bill's fish were on a PRGT behind a Rainbow/other dodger. "Big Al" Ezell was on the water and got 20-30 to 18, half Kokanee, half Rainbow. WEDNESDAY JULY 16th.............................SALMON OPENER OFF LIMITS !!!!! Before I get into this fishing report, I have to thank Mike Booker for inviting me to his backyard.. The East Delta.....Have not missed the salmon opening day since the first year they closed it from January 15th through July 15th to protect the Winter runs.......If you are around my age, you can remember when you could take salmon all year long....Enough said" The Report....Mike pulls up right on schedule six am. sharp! Can't tell you how excited I am to get an opportunity to join Mike and fish where major tournaments are held every year and to have a chance to get a fish of a life time......As we are driving south on interstate 5 , Mike explains to me how fishing can change day by day also telling me he had a good day on Monday....Fishing for over thirty years, I totally understood!...On a positive note, we had good tides & a good moon phase along with good weather..Arrived at Kings Island Resort, and launched at this small one boat at a time ramp...We entered through Disappointment slough and I immediately was lost!! Islands, cuts meandering endlessly but very fishy!! We started off with 6 inch Senko's & 5/0 hooks.....Very slow start as the tide was high slack..Mike assured me once we got some movement, things would happen..And, just as he predicted, things got going quickly as we started to get bit! ...Mike's method of madness is he doesn't spend much time in one location as there so much water to cover its run & gun...We were looking for aggressive fish and we found them! A few dinks, then bigger fish as the current picked up..By ten am. we had caught over 15 fish to three & half pounds..Mike switched over to a brushhog with a 1/2 oz bullet weight and nailed another 3 plus pounder! I stayed with my 6 inch worm as I needed to get better pitching and was doing well....My seventh fish of the day was my largest! 5 pounds 4 oz. Never thought this novice would get a bass this large? While it was in the 5 pound range, it looked much bigger! Mike took a few pictures before releasing him...By noon we paused to eat lunch....We had now caught 25 bass! Our next area would be towards Mildred Island where we would be doing some drop-shotting...Good move as we found bass chasing minnows right to the surface..It looked as if were RAINING on the water as the bass pushed the schools of bait towards the bank!!! Did very well in this area drop-shotting bringing our total number of bass caught to 38 fish..Even Mike who fishes this area on a regular basis was impressed with the days action.....Late in the day we went back to pitching Senko's and this rookie caught the last two fish..A 3 pounder & a 2....Don't know how many cast we made, but it had to be over a thousand!!! Two happy anglers heading home and only once did I think about the salmon closure...Just once as the joy of catching these bass enthroned me....For the record, the bite slowed down as the tide filled back in but a great bite on the outgo...Did alot of practicing pitching worms on my front lawn the past two weeks and it did pay off as Mike hardly did any coaching me..Thanks again Mike for sharing your backyard with me..THE EAST DELTA....see ya on the water....Naked.....

JULY 10th through July 13th........................NO WIFES...NO DOGS....NO NEWSPAPERS, T.V. & NO PHONE SERVICE....Robert (Shell Station) and myself arrived late Thursday at campsite # 20 which would be our home away from home for three days!! Roberts Dodge Supercab & Lund boat combined is about 39 feet long and the advertised campsite was 40 feet long! Not much room for error as it was a challenge pulling in & out which we did each day we launched the boat!! I'm thinking the people who design these sites all drive small Toyota's? LOL...The weather on Thursday was hot & smoky but Friday thru Sunday improved to just warm with just a hint of smoke.....While this is a recreational lake, the good news is there is no water skier's or jet ski's with a 5 mph speed limit....Just a few canoe's paddling around & friendly people.. AND NOW THE FISHING REPORT......We used one downrigger & three other rods set up with lead core line....Both worked to perfection using Hoochies & Half-Fast spreaders....With the warm surface temps reaching 72.5 degrees, I was surprised to see fish hitting the top!...This lake is well stocked with planters & some hold overs which went to about 17 inches....Boat pressure is not a problem as we never saw more than 5 boats on the lake at one time all the time we were there!..Forgot to mention,we tipped the hoochies with good old nightcrawlers & used Pro-Cure LV trout scents....Robert even used corn and it worked! Stumpy Meadows is a shallow water lake averaging only 50 feet with a few deep spots that go 113 feet by the dam....As we found out, you really gotta be careful pulling a downrigger ball as the depth can change quickly...Yeah, we banged the bottom a few times but no major mistakes!...Caught most of our fish between 25 - 40 feet and kept the boat speed between 1.2 to 1.8 mph.....We had three double hook ups & one triple which is always a challenge for netting!!! In the three & one half days spent fishing we landed 40 rainbows with the best day on Sunday got 17 fish.....Releasing many & never going over our limit....Robert kept the Camp Host happy with fish already cleaned and ready to eat! Don't know if its legal, but fed the local Eagle a small injured trout? Like most campers, we brought more food than than we could consume but tried hard !! N.Y. steaks, hamburgers, hot dogs not too mention the 4 star breakfast with 3 eggs apiece!! NO SMORES......Averaged about 5 hours sleep a night as we played cards till midnight each evening but managed to be on the water by 7:00am sharp!....Did some hiking which I'm still paying for!! Robert's 39 years old...I'm 62 !!!!! Tried fly fishing but couldn't get a rise and there wasn't much of a hatch....This was the first time in twenty five years I have camped without my wife and while I had fun with Robert, I kinda missed her! She keeps me in line...In a nutshell, I would recommend this small lake for fisherman that don't mind catching planters with an occasional hold over...Dept of Fish & Game have done well in stocking this body of water...And, you don't have to pay an arm & a leg for gas to get there!!! Thanks Robert for inviting me along as I really enjoyed your company and had fun as every day was an adventure....Back to the delta this week joining Mr. Mike Booker for some bass fishing..Hope with all the practice pitching Senko,s at home have helped.....See ya on the water....Naked......P.S.. Hey!Tom Ramage I'm ready for those big lakes on highway 88......

I had a chance to fish with a good friend of mine today around Frank's Tract. The air was bit smoky, but with the wind over at Frank's... it wasn't much of an issue. The tide was good. It was cooler today than the day before. We fished the tules and some of the banks. I caught my limit with plastics by 10. Tight Lines, Luckypants888

I had a chance to Mark Wilson out in my boat hunting for summer stripers. I left my lucky dog, Spike, home due to the heat. We landed no legal stripers, 6-8 undersized stripers (one trolling!) and a 6-7 small catfish. 7 hours, 36 miles. Water 72-73*, semi-clear to dirty; air 73-102*, sky smokey; wind 0-3 mph. We trolled the Sac above & below the Rio Vista Bridge. We bait fished frozen shad above the Power Lines for 4 hours. We just could not find the stripers. The water was semi-clear at best, usually dirty. It was a hot day, little to no wind. Thanks for the company, great time Mark.

Looking to be fishing out at the Montezuma Slough and surrounding sloughs and area. Looking to get tips from y'all. Baits for bait fishin... Lures for trollin.... etc.... Should we troll there??? Are there some specific spots we should try??? We hope ya'll will give us some pointers. we sure would like to increase our chances a bit considering the cost to fish these days and the price of gas.... Are there some areas that we can find largemouth in that area or are we strictly Striper and Sturgeon fishin in that area??? How about Catfish??? I kindof scaned past postings but didn't see anything regarding Suisun Montezuma area..... Anybody fishin that area???? Pass the info please???? Thanks all....

WEDS JULY 2nd ................................EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM ?...... NOT ALWAYS!!!! I get a call from my good friend Al from Big Al's Guide Service late on Tuesday....Tells me he's heading for lake Berryessa on Weds and invites me along ..Anytime Al has a empty seat in his ThunderJet, I jump at the chance to join him...After all, he's one of the better guides Koke fishing at New Melones & Berryessa....Well, Al tells me he wants to get an early start and I ask Al what time are you gonna pick me up? He replys " three thirty am!!!!!! OK! see ya in the morning....Set the alarm for 2:15 am and ended up getting less than 4 hours rest after watching the Giants game...Gulping down large amounts of coffee & getting my stuff ready, Al is right on time....3:30 am....Here we go in the dark heading for Berryessa!...Al introduced me to his neighbor Jim who also was invited.....Arrived at the launch at 5:00am sharp! First boat on the water...Here's how the day went......Didn't get our first fish till 8:30 am. That means we shot blanks for more than three hours!! So much for the early thing as I think the fish were still sleeping! LOL....We used Hoochies in pink & Seps dodgers in many colors laced with the the smelliest corn from garlic to carp spit...Nasty stuff!! But it worked...We covered water from 30 feet to down to 79 feet.....The first three fish hooked never made it to the boat as we went 0 for three! The next fish hooked, we got in, a small koke that went 14 inches....Don't know what happened? But. the next 4 fish were Rainbows!!! Al kept dropping the trolling balls down trying to find the the depths where he thought the Kokes were holding.....No luck! We continued catching Rainbows....We got to the point where we started releasing the trout so our limits for Kokes were not effected......Al kept assuring us we would find the Kokes if it took all day! Well, it did!! late in the afternoon only one other boat besides us was still out. Just when we put a time limit on the days fishing...5:30pm...We get into a koke bite!!! 5 in a row!!! Summary: A great day rainbow fishing & according to Big Al, a slow day for Kokes!!! Total fish caught and kept -----7 kokes & 6 rainbows.....releasing many, many trout....While Jim & myself had fun catching fish Big Al was disappointed by the lack of Kokanee ....In talking with other anglers, they also had a slow day...Thanks again Al for the invite but next time could we make it a more normal 5:00am start? Plan on returning to Stumpy Meadows & camping a couple days with Robert from the Shell station on the eleventh of this month...Hope there will be less smoke than my last visit? See ya on the water......Naked...

July.......Cowlitz River Summer Steelhead Fishing with a 6 Fish Limit!!!! We are already seeing tons of these fish being caught on the Cowlitz and the run will peak this month. Looking to catch your 6 fish limit of powerful, chrome bright summerruns? Then don't delay and call today to reserve your date. Stop wishing and lets go fishing for limits of chrome!!! The Cowlitz has two distinct runs of aggressive biting fish, "A" runs which are now in the river and "B" runs which show up later in the summer. The "A" run that is currently here now are 8 to 12 lb. fish destined for the hatchery at Blue Creek. "B"run's are larger fish 12 to 18 pounds and return to the Barrier Dam hatchery. Due to the Cowlitz River hatcheries seeing an abundance of steelhead return in the last few weeks, the limit has been increased to 6 fish per person. Lets go get 'em! Currently we are catching an average of 6 to 10 fish a day and expect those number to increase into double digits by the 4th of July weekend. Several limits have been caught on various days freedrifting from Blue Creek to the I-5 Bridge. We are using Fetha Styx FSSH 961-2 ultra light spinning rods with Shimano Spinning reels loaded with 8 lb line. Freedrifting produces a fishing style that is very natural to the fish and drifts that are hundreds of yards long covering lots of holding water. Come experience the heart-pounding, fast and intense fish catching action on these ultra light rods! We are currently taking reservations for both morning and afternoon/evening trips on the Cowlitz. We will be fishing from 2 large roomy 25 foot Alumaweld Super Vee boats with 200 hp motors from Yamaha and Mercury. Prime dates are still available thru August 17th for Cowlitz River Steelhead.

Well I decided to head up to Prosser Creek, on Sunday with my co-worker from shell. Its been 9 years since my father drown there. To my surprise the water level was higher than I expected it to be. I arrived, at Prossor creek at 7am to launch the boat while I was pulling out Steve pulled the rope towards the trailer. Im not going to tell you what happen next. Started to troll down 30 feet with the downrigger with a hook and worm 5 feet above the flasher attach to the downrigger ball. The second rod I was using a lead core down 4 colors in which got me down to 25 feet using an apex with an orange grub. 8.15am got an 18 inch rainbow, than at 8.31am second fish using lead core down 4 colors trolling near the dam. With Steve being a rookie he wants to set the pole with every bump. I said my good byes to my father and let the lake at 11.45am

I brought my good friend Bill Bushey out to pitch for largemouths again. I couldn't pass up a day in the delta with little wind. We didn't fish the best tide, but I didn't care cuz everything else was perfect. Low tide was 8am. We started just as the water started to move in. Bill did very well with 3 keepers before I caught one. One was a 3 lber. Then immediately I caught a 1lber. Fishing was difficult as expected during the incoming tide. So around noon we enjoyed a good lunch and beer under a shady tree. Then after a lunch and a good rest we went back to work. Around 2pm Bill went bang bang with a 2 lb 12oz and 2 lb 5ozer. Yep! He had a 5 fish limit. And I only had a 1 and 2lber. That's 2 trips in a row he's beaten me in bass fishing. And he's just using a spinning rod to pitch with. He's really gotten accurate with that 6 1/2 G Loomis of mine. But we were'nt finished yet. Then about 3:30 or so I went bang bang bang with a 4lb 9ozer jumping up out of the water in some new waters I've never fished before. Then 2 2lbers! So I ended up beating Bill after all. Thanks to the moving incoming water! That's it! Good fishing! Jerry Yuke

THURSDAY JUNE 26th.......................THINKING I COULD GET AWAY FROM THE VALLEY SMOKE & DO A DAY OF FISHING STUMPY MEADOWS AT 4,500 feet proved to be a mistake!!! The thick smoke was 5 times worst than Tuesdays delta fishing!! Took my lovely wife Sandra, as she has never been to this small central Sierra mountain lake and she was impressed with pictures I had taken recently.....A great day of catching rainbows & brown's was ruined with a THICK layer of smoke that had our eyes watering & burning...Not to mention killing the post card beauty that she had seen just a few weeks ago... The smoke was so bad you couldn't see from one end of the lake to the other ! And from the dam to the other end is less than a mile!!.....You get the picture ,so lets talk about the fishing........Not having downriggers, I went with lead core line & used Half-Fast attractors model 2CS....Remember, I'm a rookie at trout trolling so I was keeping it SIMPLE!! ......Getting advice from Robert from the Shell Gas station helped.....The end business was 20 inches of 6 lb. test mono with a # 6 bait hook.....And, two boxes of nite-crawlers purchased at Wal-Mart.....Had to drop a bucket behind the boat to slow down my boat speed to 1.2 mph.....First fish caught was a 15.5 inch brown and I don't remember how many colors I was out because this fish hit when I was paying out line!! Do know it was less than three, which meant the fish was just below the surface....Was hoping like most mountain lakes, the wind would pick up & blow some of this smoke away around noon...It didn't happen! Never got windy all day and all we got was a slight breeze that put out a slight ripple...Didn't expect to stay all day, but continued to get bit and by 5:00pm we had boated 8 fish and being rookies lost another eight or more....Only three other boats out trying their luck as I think they were camping at the site? Despite the conditions, really had fun doing this basic trolling thing using crawlers. Most fish caught were between 4 & 5 colors out which I guess is less than 25 feet down? The 7 rainbows caught were all between 12 & 14 inchers..( Planters ) with the Brown a bonus fish....With a hugh void coming soon ( NO INLAND SALMON FISHING ) will be doing lots of other types of fishing just like this...No! they don't pull your string like the big boys, but its still a form of fishing......After getting home in the dark ( 9:30 pm. ) Brought out the pictures of Stumpy Meadows on a clear day!! LOL....See ya on the water...Naked....P.S. Nobody out fishing??? I feel like I'm the only one on this thread posting!! Oh well...Hope someone's reading it?

TUESDAY JUNE 24th.............FLUNKED PITCHING SENKO'S CLASS 101.......After spending two hundred dollars on a new 7' 2" xc 724 Lamiglas Senko Special & hooking it up with a ABU REVO inshore baitcaster with all the bells & whistles I thought I was ready for the next level of Bass angling......PITCHING & FLIPPING !!! WRONG!!!!!!............Had the pleasure of having Mike Booker in my boat for my second lesson on worm fishing...There would be no side arm or overhead casting on this day..My instructor, Mike, insisted me learning pitching & flipping and as I watched Mike's mechanics it looked fairly easy!! After all, in over thirty years of fishing have no problem fly fishing, throwing baits etc....This is how my day went....One bird nest after another and don't think there was a tree branch out there I didn't hit? Mike had all the patience in the world with instruction...Looking at my mechanics my arms were moving forward not allowing the rod to do the work & my cast were rainbows as I could not sling the worm close to the water....Meanwhile, watching Mike hit the target with ease & pulling out some very nice bass I just got totally frustrated and was sweating more than I should have...When I did get lucky and got my worm to my target I missed at least 5 nice bites either being late setting the hook or not having my reel engaged!!!I did catch 3 bass or I should say " they caught me....Never felt comfortable much of the day as I fumbled around with my new rod & reel & it felt alien in my hands....The easy out would be going back to side arm or overhand casting but needed to learn pitching!!! PRACTICE, PRACTICE & more PRACTICE.......I owe Mike big time as I know he spent more time coaching me than enjoying a day on the water catching fish....Out of all the miscues, I did manage one perfect cast which landed me a 3 pounder...I got Mike's approvable & a high five!!....Even a blind dog gets a bone once in a while!! A twelve hour day on the delta along with a decent bite on the outgo....Long way to go for this angler till I feel comfortable....Thanks again Mike for being patient & staying with me....Humbled....Naked....

Bill Crooks, my lucky dog, Spike, and I went out for summer stripers. I'm just learning how to successfully fish the Delta during the summer. 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday. Landed 3 (1 19er, 17, 16). We lost none, had 3-4 hits/no stick, lost no tails. Jigged & trolled shallow. 7.5 hours, 39 miles. Water 74*, clear to dirty; air 52-85*, sky smoky; wind 5-15 mph. We launched at Hogback and took another one for the team, motored to many different areas to check out, report on the water condition(s). We jigged the Sac River above Isleton at high/slack tide (semi-clear) for an hour, nothing. Shallow trolled the Sac & its sloughs above and below the Rio Vista Bridge, water varied from semi-clear to muddy the further down river/West we went. I know this is the time of the year I do better bait fishing, why didnt I do it? Trailer flat tire on the way back to Sac. I pull over next to a farm. A farm worker loaned me his jack, Bill & I change the tire and are back on the road quickly. Back in Sac Tire Mart replaces valve stem for free! Fishing (not catching day) pricey! A day with Bill Crooks priceless!

JUNE 16th through the 18th............Spent three days tent camping in this primitive coastal mountain reservoir.......With no drinking water available ( Bring your own ) and porta-potties that rarely get cleaned, this area is for campers that don't ming getting DIRTY!! While the lake is still almost full with water the lack of spring rainfall has the surrounding scenery very dry & dusty.....Just happened to be there during a FULL moon phase which I think effected the daytime fishing...With water temps at the surface well into upper seventy's we found a summer pattern that is common in the month of July...In a nutshell, very tough fishing for bass & crappie....Our next camping trip will be New Melones Reservoir.....Water & showers available and just $17.00 per day...........................THURSDAY June 19th.......Had a chance to join a friend Mike Booker who invited me along for some delta bass fishing.....Mike has already caught an over ten pound bucketmouth this year & has much knowledge on worm technics ......The plan was I would show my secrets of catching smallmouths if he would teach me the art of throwing Senko's...We fished in my backyard, the north delta as Mike usually hits the East delta.... This is how the day went.....No delta breezes on this day & the afternoon temps were in the mid-ninty's with some pretty good tides with a 4 footer outgo & 3 1/2 foot income....Started off trolling the upper Steamboat/Sutter slough rip rap using the 1/8 oz.speedtraps with the crawfish color pattern & the white pink shad......Both colors work well as we pretty much stayed even on the hook ups.....Mike had a double fish on one lure hookup & lost both as the light line broke! Both fish looked to be in the over two pound bracket...He was using my ultra light set up so I will take the blame for the weak spot in the line....Even though I just loaded it up with brand new P-line floracarbon....The smallie fishing was just OK with periods of moderate success with no monsters caught....But, Mike got the idea how to catch them using this method.....With the tide really going out it was now time for my lesson catching Mr. Largemouth....We shot over to the Minor slough area where the structure is more suitable for this type of angling.....We hooked up the Senko's with Mike using a 5/0 worm hook & 6 inch worm Texas style ( No Weight )....I used 5 inchers with 4/0 hooks because that was all I had!! Of couse, with Mikes experience he starts hooking fish both pitching & underhand throwing next to wood & the many patches of plants.....With Mike coaching me along I finally got my first pick up as my line moved sideways..I hit it hard and nailed a two pounder that did many jumps!! Now. that was exciting!! My biggest problem was detecting the bite and as time went on I got better & better...I learned to pay out enough line to get the Senko to slowly sink & throw in places where I never thought would hold fish.....This type of fishing is deadly...They hit that worm like CANDY!! Once you know what your doing!....Slow presentation & finesse is the key for sure...Thanks Mike for turning me on to worm ( SENKO) fishing...Ton's of fun and never thought these bass would hold in such shallow cover....Can't wait to get to Fishermans warehouse and get a better selection of Senkos & larger hooks....While our largest fish was just over three pounds I couldn't imagine pulling out a 5- 8 pounder....? A 11 hour day bassing & learning new ways to catch fish even in the heat of the day....Both smallies & bucketmouths......FUN, FUN , FUN!!! Might have to slow down throwing swimbaits & do more worms stuff??? Thanks for the company Mike and will hit next week in my boat....See ya on the river......Naked...

THURSDAY JUNE 12th..................INTRODUCTION TO DELTA ANGLING 101.......My student for the day was Brian Arimoto, a young 25 year old well educated young gun who's passion for fishing is unbelievable !! I met Brian through a mutual friend, Roland Apiras and after a few E-mails set up a date to hit the delta....Telling Brian in advance, don't expect a day where the fish are jumping in the boat. Not gonna happen! After two days of howling Northerly winds just knew the water would be in bad shape & murky.....Not to mention very soft tides with less than two foot movement on both income & outgo........Well, arriving at Hogback early & launching it was everything I mention...Dirty water, breezy, with weak tides....Trolling for stripes would be out of the question as the water was way too dirty, and you couldn't even see the prop in the water!! With the lower Steamboat unfishable with the tide out decided to try Minor thinking we might find cleaner water. The run to Minor was a mistake!! It was just the same...Dirty!!! After throwing traps just next to Hall,s without a bump for thirty minutes came to the conclusion our efforts were fruitless! Time to try something else...With the wimp tide starting to come back in maybe the upper part of Steamboat & Sutter slough would start to clean up? Began trolling Speedtraps & slowly the water clarity improved as we picked up a few smallies...The secret was spraying lots of BANG on the plastic baits...It seemed to work? Worked very hard picking up just a fish here & there with lots water coverage with nothing!! No doubt about it, the bite was off!! In the next three hours tried every location in upper Steamboat where I knew the resident smallies hold out....As the bite got slightly better with a few double hookups towards noon it was enough action to keep Brian in a positive mode...With the top of the tide due in a few hours wanted to try the main Sacto. and see if i could find some schoolie stripes .....Went back to the location I did well at a week ago....As luck would have it we found a pod of small stripes & got the one ounce jigs out....Not half as many as a week ago, but enough to make it interesting.....With the wind blowing about 12 mph it was hard to hold the boat over the schools of bait & stripes but we managed to get several doubles which is always fun...Nothing over 5 pounds but still we were catching fish!! This action lasted for a few hours then slowed.....Returned to Steamboat and resumed smallie trolling with the tide just starting to go out....Much better action!!!! Not red hot, but they were on a positive bite some with crawfish body parts lodged in their mouths..Always a good sign to see that...Its now late in the afternoon and the sun is starting to slant more creating shade pockets and the winds have relaxed, both of us are dripping with sweat but with a fairly good bite its not a problem....and we are getting some fish in the three pound plus bracket...Brian picked up a few small stripes as we were targeting the bass that took his line to the center of the river, they will do that using light stuff....Fun, Fun....Its now about a few hours before dark & the tide is reaching the bottom... I gave Brian the option...We could head for the barn & call it day or try a hour or so throwing baits in the lower Steamboat area....No hesitation on his part...Lets do it.....Thats what I wanted to hear.....Began throwing swimbaits and got a few taps but no takers from Mr. Striper ..Brian picked up a two pound bass and we noticed the bass were hitting on the surface....We changed over to top water baits ...Brian went to a frog pattern and I went to a large 8 inch Chub Creek which I have never had luck with...While popping it back to the boat making large boils then stopping, we paused to look to the left as a bass downstream hit the surface.....Just at the same time while my lure was motionless my Chub Creek Exploded!!!!! I ripped back as hard as i could as this monster bass jumped three times throwing water all over....This had to be the highlight of the day.....All I wanted to do is get this puppy close enough to the boat to grab his mouth and see how much it weighed....Didn't get the chance as just next to my reach he jumps again throwing the Chub.!! This fish will always be in the back of my mine, like many others lost....How big was it??? Thats fishing.....Well, a fun day on the water sharing the delta with an a young man that was willing to try any method possible to catch fish as we turned a negative to a positive & put in twelve long hours!! On this day we worked hard to find fish as I think you learn more as the days when everything falls in place and fishing is a cakewalk ....Thanks for the company Brian & being patient & positive.......Naked....

JUNE 9th & 10 th............................A TWO DAY FISHING REPORT............CLIMATOLOGY IS THE STUDY OF COMBINATIONS OF TEMPERATURE,PRECIPITATION,WINDS & CHARACTERISTICS OF A LOCALITY FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME.....Well. Like many others, I have fished the Central Valley for many years & can't remember so many unsettled windy conditions that Mother Nature has offered us. Since the rains shut off in March, planning a fishing trip in the months of April, May & now, June, has been nearly impossible!! Barometric pressures have been anything but STABLE creating one day of southerly winds followed by one to two days of strong north winds!! Enough said, but the weather synopsis effects each & every fishing trip.........MONDAY JUNE 9th....Got to DISCO park around 2:30 pm. using Interstate 5 (re-opened) Only a 20 minute drive from my house. With the flows out of Nimbus dam at 2,172 cfc I felt encouraged the bite would be better than my last outing when I caught just two...Once again anchored in 8 feet of water just below the 160 bridge....With the slight increase of current adjusted my weights adding another slit-shot to my curly tail 1/16 oz jigs...Got my first fish after throwing for one hour without a bump! A small male. Water temps were up to 67.5 degrees in this part of the American and I'm thinking once the sun starts slanting towards the late afternoon & early evening the bite would turn on..A guide boat & one other boat showed up about 5:00pm. Both boats picked up two...and I got my second fish in the same time period. Once again, the bite did not materialize!!! Fished till almost dark with a grand total of TWO fish. Summary: Either, I picked two days that the shad were inactive or they are just not here in numbers like previous years? Are the returning numbers of shad down like the salmon? Could be? Was hoping Roland Apiras & Brian Arimoto were on the water to confirm the DISMAL bite on this day......................TUESDAY JUNE 10th.........Getting my required 6 hours of sleep after the disappointing trip to the American monday evening, Robert Gibbs (Shell Station) was right on time to pick me up as we planned on hitting Stumpy Meadows for some relaxing trout fishing...Didn't know what kind of day we would have as once again strong northerly winds were forecast for the valley....Arrived at Stumpy Meadows around 7:00am. Just a light breeze on the water and trout were dimpling on the surface taking the small aquatic midge (bugs) at a pretty good rate....As you know most of my fishing is done in the delta as I know very little about lake trout fishing using downriggers & long lining just below the surface etc...Have gone a few times with Guy Brown & Tom Ramage but still find it strange having no tides to read!! And they do all the work guiding me along...Same thing with Robert as he told me to relax as he set things up....Unlike delta fishing with the run & gun thing, I found this time of fishing very low keyed & relaxing....And the scenery, outstanding with all the green pine trees & mountains at 4,500 feet elevation....Did pick up a second rod stamp stamp as I guess most lake fisherman use two rods while trolling? Robert focused on the top of the water column only putting the lines down less than twenty five feet using mini crawlers behind sling blades or attractors or whatever you call them...We also long lined a mini plastic rapala some 140 feet behind his Lund boat.....Well!! Everything worked as we hooked over 15 trout releasing a few & losing some just behind the boat...All caught were rainbows except one which was a brown....Ended the day just one fish short of a limit ...All nine fish were loaded with the small insects black in color so if they were planters, they were in the water awhile...A pair of eagles were constantly watching us and as we hooked up would swoop down looking for a meal...Interesting! Sea lions in the delta & eagles up here!! The winds held off till around noon & reallly picked up at about one as we decided to head in....Robert, Thanks for a relaxing outing and being a perfect host ,,,Not often I get to relax, eat my lunch & sip a beer....Returning to the valley in the afternoon the winds were roaring with many fires with smoke thought out.....Let me tell you how delicious the trout were with fresh picked garden squash & rice......And at last 8 hours of sleep!! See ya on the river. Naked.....

ok,listen dudes. Delta Bait & Tackle, ( aka) Fishermans Warehouse will be fine. They have the knowledge but will they have the prices. Dont you think for a second with the economy the way it is that people will go to FW for advice and bass pro for price. Trust me, unless FW matches price they will lose business plus people will go there just because it is what it is. While they are there buying ammo, oh well, I might as well buy a couple of broken backs or yozuri's , oh yeah, in my favorite color that was sold out at FW and couldnt get the whole spring fishing. FW has to do alot more of keeping the popular product on the shelf because BP will adapt to the area and keep lots of area product on the shelf at good pricing . I love FW but face it, BP will soon have knowledgeable people for this area working there. They will know the same thing FW knows when giving advice. Do you really think that they wont get the seminars there with the known guides in the area. Those guides will jump at the chance to give a seminar at BP vs FW just for the fact there business is down and they can attract a bigger crowd. I hate to say it but I hope FW has a plan. I will still go there on a regular basis but will use all my resources to gain better fishing for myself. Thats just the way it is. Sorry. BRB

Tuesday. Bill Crooks invited me and my lucky dog, Spike, for a day at Oroville. We also wanted to test putting up Bill's Willy Boat top for the 2nd-3rd time and Bill's hand-made sun-screen side curtains for the 1st time. Top went up and came down easily, side-curtain pricessless. We landed 7 (1 Coho to 16, 6 Rainbow to 17.5). We lost (broke off!) 2, 6-10 hits/no stick. I kept the Coho for smoking, Bill the Rainbows. 8 hours!, 7 miles. Water 68.2-69.3*; air 60-75*, high overcast to clear; wind 0-2mph. Trolled off the Bridge at 0.9-1.2 mph (GPS) at 30-53 down on downriggers. Another tough day. Where were the Coho? The one I got was at 50 on a white hootchie & white Sling Blade (both smeared with anchovy paste), a 2-hook rig, garlic corn on the leading hook, 1 piece of anchovy fillet on the trailer. Krill gel on the ball. The Rainbows were caught on orange spinners or white hootchies. Many bites/no sticks on the pink Radical Glo tubes. We launched at the lower Spillway Ramp. Thanks for the invite and fellowship Bill.

Monday. My lucky dog, Spike, and I went out for some Kokanee. I landed 6 (0 Kings, 4 Kokanee to 17, 2 Rainbows to 15 (most clean). I lost none, had 1-2 hits/no stick. Released the Rainbows, kept the Kokanee for smoking. 6 hours, 10 miles. Water 66.9-69.2*; air 52-82*, high overcast to clear; wind 0-2mph. Trolled off the Big Island (5), mid lake (1) & the Ranch House (0) at 0.9-1.25 mph (GPS) at 30-52 down on downriggers. Another tough day. Kokanee caught on watermelon dodger, Pink Radical Glo Tube 2-hook rig with 2 kernels of Shoe Peg garlic scented corn/hook, krill gel on the ball & dodger. 5 of the six I caught were between 6-9 a.m., very, very tough after that. I launched at Capell Cove (BOR, free launch).

MONDAY JUNE 2nd....................A MIXED BAG FOR SURE........BIG TIDES...NEW MOON....MORE DELTA WINDS....$ 153.00 TO FILL JETCRAFT & FORD TRUCK.....AND JUST A FEW BUCKS LEFT OVER FOR ICE & A 12 PACK OF BUD LIGHT!!!!WAS IT WORTH IT? HERE'S MY REPORT..........Checking my tide book after launching at Hogback noticed the color of the water (Very Stained) just like the book said" A 5 foot outgoing minus tide followed by a moderate incoming tide late in the day....Made my mind up before leaving the house, I would not troll for stripes on this day as I super charged both batteries & would focus on throwing swimbaits & jig ....With the gusty winds & very dirty water in lower Steamboat struggled getting anything to hit....Decided to head the back way via Steamboat to try Minor as it is more fishable when the delta winds are whipping....Saw only two other boats in Minor trying there luck....The tide is way at this point exposing the muck on the river banks as I began throwing 1/2 ounce traps....Nothing for the first 20 minutes or so, then as I was letting the boat drift with the current hit the first fish of the day. A nice 6 pounder followed with several others to about 10 pounds.....All fish caught were in less than 4 feet of water just at the waters edge! Spawned out & hungry they hit the traps very hard with hardly any taps or bumps. Around 1:00pm the tide quit & the incoming tide started...The bite died....Tried a little spooning by Halls cut picking up two small largemouths and a bonus 12 lb. catfish.......No spots on it but I think it was a channel? Returned to the upper Steamboat area & tried my luck trolling Speedtraps for Mr. Smallmouth...Noticed the water was clearing as the tide worked back in and did pretty well catching 20-30 smallies to 2 lbs...Lots of fun on light equiptment & 6 pound test....Thinking at this point not a bad fishing despite the windy conditions etc..At about 4:00 pm.I'm now in the main Sacto river and just motoring slowly & watching my graph when it lights up with fish from top to bottom...No brainer here!! Dropped the electric & grabbed my spooning rig....Had a 1 oz.Hopkins smoothie in green and as soon as I dropped it in the water....Bam! It was like fishing my lure in a fish hatchery.....Bam! Bam! Bam! one right after another...THE PROBLEM WAS they were all 1 pound 16-18 inchers to about 3 pounders with a few to maybe 5 pounds!!!!!!It was almost impossible to get the jig to hit the bottom without a hookup...Switched over to a single hook Hopkins as the trebles were tearing the small fish up...Don't know where these fish came from but I can tell you they were in the thousands!!! And not returning spawners from up river....After catching and releasing too many to count I couldn't get one over 5 pounds...Continued catching them till 7:00 pm and they never stopped hitting!!!!!!!!!!Knowing they would be the target for meat fisherman I will not give out exact locations other than the main Sacto river....Most of these stripes are our future as two to three year olds...Another thing noticed,There were tons of baitfish among them...Maybe shad? Mr.Fireman Jack you know the location for sure......After a super day of catching it was worth every penny I spent for Gas......See ya on the river.....Naked.....

I went out in Dan Gee's new Lund boat. The early morning wasn't very good with the high tide at 5am. Fish here and there! The best time was about 1 hour before low tide around 11am. Dan did the best catching one limit from 2lbs to 3 1/2. Three of them were over 3 lbs. He did very well. I caught 4 keepers from 1lb to 2 3/4 lbs. It was tough fishing. Probably cuz the weekend boaters dirtied up the water. As soon as the water settles down this week fishing should be a lot better. Oh! I forgot to mention that we caught all our fish on senkos. I tried rattletraps but not bites. That's it! Good fishin" to Y'all! Jerry

I had to resort to trolling a 3/8 oz egg sinker above a watermelon dodger, #2 white Needlefish w/half a crawler 150 back to catch Rainbows to avoid an apparent skunk. The one Kokanee was caught on a Radical Glo Pink Tube 2-hook rig with 2 kernels of Shoe Peg corn/hook, garlic scent for the corn, krill gel on the ball & dodger. June and July.......Cowlitz River Summer Steelhead Fishing with J and L Guided Sportfishing!!! With the end of spring Chinook season comes summer steelhead fishing. We are already seeing some of these fish being caught on the Cowlitz and the run will be building well into the 4th of July weekend and beyond. Looking to catch your 3 fish limit of powerful, chrome bright summerruns? Then don't delay and call today to reserve your date. Stop wishing and lets go fishing. Due to the Cowlitz River hatcheries seeing an abundance of steelhead return in the last few weeks, the limit has been increased to 3 fish per person. Lets go get 'em! Currently we are catching an average of 3 to 5 fish a day and expect those number to increase into double digits by the 4th of July weekend. Also don't forget to ask about Columbia River Trophy Sturgeon fishing at Bonneville and Keeper Sturgeon in Astoria. Season runs from June 1st thru the 24th. Buoy Ten is also right around the corner so book your fall salmon dates Now! Catch rates, fishing reports, and additional informationmay be obtained online at http://www.columbia-river-fishing-guide.com or by phone at (206)-920-2428.

THURSDAY MAY 29th....................With the Sacto Jazz Jubilee over and keeping me off the water for the past two weeks it was time to wet my line and decided to hit the Discovery park area before the closure of Highway 5 on Friday...As I throttled slowly up the American I couldn't help noticing the very low flows even though the reports said the release was at 1,500 cfc,it seemed much lower!! Tried just below the 160 bridge where I averaged some 15 - 25 shad last year at this time. No shad caught, but did picked up two small stripes to 18 inches....Used 1/16 oz. curly tail jigs in red & white and just about every color in the rainbow but couldn't draw a strike from the little tarpon Mr. shad....Did the weight ajustment many times trying to find the proper drift...Nothing worked..Decided to move upstream towards Cal Expo where I could find holes in faster moving water...On the third bridge ( railroad ) I ran into very shallow water where I stuck the bottom of the boat...This is where a Jet prop comes into play for sure...Took about 5 minutes to free my hull and decided to head back downstream where I felt more comfortable...Re-anchored at the 160 bridge area and did the do or die thing...Caught my first shad of the season around 3:30 pm....A small male. Stayed till 6:30 pm & once again picked up a few small stripes using the mini-jigs...and one more small shad bringing my total to TWO!!!!Prime time in this location is from about 4:00pm till dark and on this day don't think many fish were moving through...Very slow bite but one outing won't convince me they are not there as this area is pretty hot through early June...Maybe another 500 cfc would set up the bite? Nice to be back on the water...Naked.

Bill Crooks invited me join he and Ted Fagunes in his Willy Boat hunting for stripers. We had one take, we landed one 5.5# striper on a Clown Yo-Zuri. We fished the end of an incoming and first half of an outgoing tide. 7 hours, 40 miles. Water 63-67*; air 52-72*, sky high clouds; wind 2-14 Shallow trolled most of the day (Clown & Chartreuse w/Black dots Yo-Zuris, Pink Bomber), deep trolled for an hour. The water was semi-clear (we could barely see the anti-cavitation plate) to dirty (we could not see it) everywhere we went. We trolled the Sac River and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. I think bait fishing may be more productive until the water clears some. Thanks for the invite Bill, always nice being able to spend a day with you and Ted.

Yesterday I took my good friend Kenny from Bel Air #11 out to pitch plastics for largemouths in those tidal waters that Kenny is unfamilar with. We had a great time. His biggest was a 3lb 6oz and several in the 1lb to 2 1/2 lb range. Also about 5 shakers! My biggest was a 4lb 13oz. down to 1lb I had a fat 2 3/4lber that I immediately released cuz she was so fat. I figured she was ready to dump her eggs. I also caught about 4 shakers or so. I caught fish on three different types of plastic. Senkos, Strike King's Rage Tail and a tube. Great fishing day! I wasn't gonna miss that fishing day for anything but a hurricane, cuz it was the 3rd day before the full moon in May. I've read in the past that the three days before the full moon are the best to fish. Wednesday is the full moon. Now the winds are back. Good fishin' Jerry

My lucky dog, Spike, and I went out to try for some Kokanee to smoke for my daughter's birthday dinner tomorrow. I landed 7 (0 Kings, 4 Kokanee to 14, 3 Rainbows to 16 (all clean). I lost 2, had 3-4 hits/no stick. Released the Rainbows, kept the Kokanee for smoking. 6 hours, 10 miles. Water 67.8-76.7!*; air 52-88*, sky clear; wind 0-2mph. Trolled off the Big Island (5) & the Ranch House (2) at 0.9-1.1 mph (GPS) at 44-55 down on downriggers. Caught most using a Radical Glo Pink Tube 2-hook rig with 2 kernels of Shoe Peg corn/hook and a Radical Glo Pink spinner/beads, garlic scent for the corn, anise or krill gel on the dodgers. I launched at Capell Cove (BOR, free launch). I spent most of my time near the Big Island, 5-8 other boats. Some radio traffic, sounded like some boats in a different area? might have done better. Beautiful day on the water, hot at the end, I have to put my top on for the rest of the season (poor Spike)!

I took my good friend Bill Bushey out casting for black bass again yesterday in the heat. We launched at the 5:30 am because of the high tide at 5am and the heat. Bill caught 3 legals on senkos before I caught any. I was missing a few. Then I figured out why I was missing the line takers. Bluegills were biting my senkos. Then I started my day by catching a 2 1/2lber to start with. Then I ended up catching ended with three 3 1/2 lbers in a row. One was loaded with eggs so I released her immediately. I felt like I was on TV. Bill ended with his limit and 4 shakers. I ended with 7 keepers and 4 shakers. I ended up keeping only 5 of the small keepers. They are better eating anyway. We quit at 11:30am. That's it! Good fishin' Jerry

Put in a lot of time Friday and Saturday for very few fish. Trolled for about 10 hours for three keepers. Fished with cut bait for about three hours for two small keepers. The water on the Sacramento side of the delta is really dirty made trolling difficult. We covered water from Antioch all the way up to the deep water channel and up into Isleton and Steamboat. Caught fish on both the San Joaquin and Sacramento side of the delta. We never found a hot spot or a time when the action was any good. Just a few fish here and there.

I attended the SIRS/Jolly Hookers Fishing Club breakfast meeting. When I got home my lucky dog, Spike, told me my wife Donna had called & would not be home from visiting out twin grandsons until late afternoon. He said he has missed seeing the cows down at Sherman Island would I consider taking him out? Normally I would have fished out of there 5-10 times by this time of the year, not once thus far this year. We picked up the boat. I've itching to try below Sherman Island on the Sac River and was skunked for satisfying my curiosity, took one for the team trying that water out. 3.5 hours, 40 miles. Water 64.7-65.1*, dirty; air 75-78*, sky clear; wind 8-12 mph. Shallow trolled Clown Yo-Zuris 140 back at 5 mph (water speed) in 6-8 of water and Rebels and Yo-Zuris deep at 2.25-3 mph 12-15 deep, 55-75' back. We launched at Lower Sherman Island and tried all the usual places down to Collinsville & on the Sac River below the Rio Vista Bridge. The water was dirty everywhere. The water higher up the Sac & on the Mokelumne River has definitely been cleaner, better trolling water thus far this year.

FRIDAY MAY 9th..............................Guy Brown & Bill Crooks invited me as a guest to attend the monthly JOLLY HOOKERS fishing club in Folsom.....The guest speaker for the day was my good friend & fellow fisherman Al Ezell ( Big Al's Guide Service ) Al gave a terrific seminar on lake fishing for Kokes & landlocked Kings....While, I'm primarily a delta fisherman and spend very little time lake fishing, I found this group very interesting, friendly, and well organized....Knowing this fishing club promotes many fun derbies throughout the year,it also involves youth fishing for kids with special problems..Very heart warming for sure. It was my pleasure meeting lots of new fellow fisherman ....Thanks for the invite Guy & Bill...Naked..

Wow, the most wind I have had out of Brannon Island, trolled everywhere for 5 hours for nada Delta south and north of Rio Vista Bridge, Deep Water Channel, Snug area, etc.. Finally at the shallowest part of that minus tide, caught 5 up to 40" .. Yep a 40" striper, don't know how much it weighed, but I would say at least 25# probably more... Of for the halibuts tomorrow....

The best bite was during the first 2 hours of the outgoing and 1st hour of the incoming tides. 8 hours, 43 miles. Water 63.5-65*, semi-clear to clear; air 53-72*, sky clear; wind 6-35 mph. Shallow trolled Clown & Rainbow Yo-Zuris 140 back at 5 mph (water speed) in 6-8 of water. We launched at Hogback & trolled the Sac R and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge.

TUESDAY MAY 6th...............................THE BITE GOES ON!!!! Company for the day was Robert from the Elk Grove Shell station..While the National Weather Service called for 10 - 25 knots in the delta ,we experienced nothing over 15 knots!.....Thanks Fish Gods....Another day of minus tides had the water conditions on the murky side but not bad enough to alter another good bite day....Best action without a doubt was the outgoing tide & the bite continued into the turn-around incoming tide...We used only one color Yo-zuri.....Char/Silver with spots.....While we got good numbers of fish, this was a day of many lost fish & many tail takers!! Enjoyed two doubles & the largest fish going 12 pounds...Out of the 21 stripes caught, it was a mixed bag of post spawned & still ripe females....Noticed the veteran fisherman around us also did very well as others struggled with boat speed or keeping their shallow running lures in the zone....Still a problem with other boaters not clearing the fishing lanes after a hookup...It so simple to just motor off to the center of the river instead of blocking other boats behind you.....Frustrating!!!! Oh well. thats group fishing...On the way back to Hogback did a little swimbait throwing & while didn't find the stripes in Steamboat did hook into the largest largemouth of the season....A 7 & 1/2 pound bucketmouth!!! And no camera in the boat....I know thats not a big thing for all you Basser's but it was exciting to me.....Another good day on the delta & thanks for the company Robert...See ya on the water.....Naked...

Pastor Steve invited me join him for the day. The plan was to meet Jeff Braden at Snug Harbor & have him follow us around. We shallow trolled for striped bass in 12-16 mph winds and the last half of a -5.5 outgoing tide and the first part of +4.0 incoming tide. We caught 9 legal stripers (released 7) to 13#, 10#, most of the rest 4 & 5#, lost 4, two undersized, had 3-4 hit/no sticks, lost 4-6 tails. We trolled the Sac River & its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. 7 hours, 36 miles. Water 62.5-65.2*, semi-clear; air 55-72*, sky clear; wind 4-20 mph. We shallow trolled Clown & Chartreuse/Black dot Yo-Zuris shallow 140 back at 4.3-5.2 mph (GPS speed, no paddle wheel or RPM gauge) in 6-8 of water. We launched at Hogback and had Jeff following us shortly thereafter. Jeff tried to cope with wind, a troublesome motor and unfamilar water and decided to accept an offer to join us in Steve's boat. We ended up having a good day despite the winds. Thanks for the invite and company Steve, hope Jeff enjoyed himself.

SUNDAY MAY 4th............Broke away from the delta, and returned to East Reservoir hoping to have a field day catching bass & crappie....Don't remember working so hard in many years locating & catching these coastal mountain bass!! Did find a mixed bag of post spawned & spawning bass in water less than 15 feet deep. Most fishing was sight fishing finding fish in the shallow coves and trying to get them to react with drop/shot Robo worms....Did OK with the larger Senko worms with no weight...It seems the smaller bass would race in front of the bigger ones & take the baits before the lunkers had a chance to react!!! Looking at last years records at this time of the year, we caught nearly a hundred !!! and had 30-40 crappie fishing days.....Could be, I picked a day when the bite was off? Also, could not find the balls of bait or bass in the deeper water like last year...My wife & myself managed to catch less than 20 bass all day with just one that went 5 pounds...and one crappie!! Oh well, whats a tank of gas and maybe we got spoiled with the big numbers last year...Still a fun day....Naked..

5/3/2008 Launched with Jason at Brannon Island at 6:00 am. We fished with anchovies and shad on the outgoing tide at the mouth of Threemile Slough and the San Joaquin River from 6:30 until about 9:00 am. Not much action and only a 16 shaker to show for it. We moved over to the west bank and started trolling at about 9:30 am. We used shallow running Yozuris and Bombers for zero hits. We covered water all the way from the power lines up into Cache Slough, Steamboat Slough, and above the Rio Vista bridge. We only saw one fish netted all day there were boats everywhere. We had to get off the water at 12:45 pm to head home. About 20 miles of water covered for a big skunkola. Off the water at 1:00 pm. The water temperature was 66 degrees.

The best bite was from morning till about noon. We landed 9 out of 15 fish. 7 kokanee, and 2 trout. 3 of the kokanee were over 2lbs each. We caught 8 legal stripers (all shallow trolling, released 4) to 9#, most 7 & 8#, lost none, no undersized, had no hit/no sticks, lost 2 tails. We caught & released 4 Smallmouths. 8 hours, 40 miles. Water 63.5-64*, semi-clear to dirty; air 55-72*, sky high overcast; wind 2-4 mph. We fished the Sac River and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. We shallow trolled Clown & Chartreuse/Black dot Yo-Zuris shallow 140 back at 5 mph in 7-9 of water. The Char/Black dot Yo-Zuris caught most of the stripers. We launched at Hogback. We trolled the end of the outgoing, slack & most of the incoming tide. There was no one tide, place, large school of stripers today. It was pretty much a scratch day for us and all of the other fishermen we talked to. It was great, however, being on the water with Bill & Bob. Thanks for the invite Bill.

We left fish to get Steve home in time for daughter's soccer game/college entrance exam testing. The best bite, again, was during the first 2 hours of the outgoing tide. 7 hours (felt like a long week-end), 41 miles. Water 61.7-63*, semi-clear to clear; air 53-76*, sky clear; wind 2-30 mph. Shallow trolled Clown (11)& Chartreuse w/black dots (9) Yo-Zuris 140 back at 5 mph in 5-8 of water. We launched at Hogback and trolled the Sac River and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. There were some really good fishermen on the water today, Mark Wilson, Ron Retzlaff, Bob White & Ron Jones, Bob Sparre, etc. Unusual happenings: (1) Guy catches a striper with a DFG tag! (2) Steve catches a striper with a $100 DFG tag! (3) Guy gets a call from the father whose daughter lost the surf rod/reel I trolled up which he will pick up Thursday. (4) Guy & Steve fish and catch fish in 25-30 mph winds for the first time. At the end of the day Steve gives Guy gas money and a tip (I'll pay him back somehow) for him catching the striper with the $100 DFG tag (what a guy!).

APRIL 26th & 27th.......Saturday & Sunday......... IF YOU DIDN'T GET BIT ON THESE TWO DAYS,YOU DIDN'T HAVE YOUR LURE IN THE WATER!!!! Yeah. there was a ton of boats out and with two Derbies going on it was hard to find unchartered water.....It was a mixed bag of fisherman for sure, from guides to novice to just your average every day fisherman.....Bottom line, just about all caught fish!! ...Most fish were in the two to eight pound class with an occasional fish in the teens...Best bite was the outgo...A QUICK SUMMARY.....SATURDAY.......Had my wife with me and we barely got a parking spot at Hogback at 8:00am.....Don't know what group was having a one day derby? But they were using the picnic grounds as a weigh in & BBQ area....Looked like fun & well organized.....Started the morning off shallow trolling the lower Steamboat area just at the top of the tide......Enjoyed a mini bite that lasted less than an hour, but managed to pick up some quality fish to 13 lbs....Decided to check out community shoals around 11:00am....Never saw so many boats at the shoals!! The good news was I had friends involved in the trolling lanes like Mark W. & Fireman Jack....and a pretty good bite was taken place...So. we joined in & dropped out lines and got bit right away.....With all the boat action it didn't seem to bother Mr. Striper one bit....as fish were caught all day...These fish in the Rio Vista area were very bright in color & must be fresh run!! The males were free flowing milt as we released them...Messy stuff....Numbers of fish caught had to be in the hundreds on Saturday just at the shoals!!! Fireman Jack's numbers were at 27 fish by 1:00pm...Who knows how many Mark got? Lots of hook-ups in his boat...and big numbers for all the guide boats...Fished the shoals right to the bottom of the tide ( 4:30pm.) and the bite slowed somewhat but you still had decent action.......Sunday.....Returned to the shoals once again...Less boats & the bite had tapered off compared to Saturday...Had to work alittle harder for hook-ups but the stripes continued to keep us busy....Unlike Saturday, we moved over to the Dairy area for a short time and did very well there but the stripes were running on the small size so we returned to the shoals & worked that area till the end of the day....You know the fish are on a good bite when you hook up reeling in as we must have caught 6-7 fish doing just that!! While I rarely fish both Saturday & Sunday being retired, glad my wife Sandy & I did...Will have to get my butt into Fishermans warehouse & replenish my Yo-Zuries as most of my clown colored lures are pretty tore up with the numbers of fish caught the past two months!!! Nice seeing Leo Castro & Tom Ramage out this weekend...Sorry you lost the big one Tom.......And, for the record, my wife once again out fished me...But, she had a good Captain.....See ya on the river...Naked...

My good friends Biff and Dennis (Rattle Trap) joined me. This was there first ever live bait bay trip. Launched at Berkley 10 minutes to 6 and got bait. Headed to the Berkley Flats for 2 hrs for 0. Ran over to the Alameda area and found a HUGE Fleet. We made about 3 drifts for about 4 hard pulling rays. Boy can these pull you line. Ran up to a light that I had good luck in the past. As soon as Rattle Trap drops his Chovey a 22 lb Butt grabs on. His first ever Halibutt. We box it. He drops back in Bam a 21 lb butt grabs on. In the box it goes. His beginner luck carrys on later to land a 23 incher. He fills his limit on his first ever Halibutt trip. Biff and myself didn't get left out. Biff gets a 31 inch butt and a short one of 21!/2 inches. I land a 23 incher on our last drift of the day at 4 pm. We ended the day keeping 5 fish 22,21,12 lbs being biggest weights and two at 31 and 23 inches. Thanks guys for the great company http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj234/fish_junky/4-26-08SanFranBayButts011.jpg http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj234/fish_junky/4-26-08SanFranBayButts013.jpg http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj234/fish_junky/4-26-08SanFranBayButts015.jpg http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj234/fish_junky/4-26-08SanFranBayButts017.jpg http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj234/fish_junky/4-26-08SanFranBayButts018.jpg

Fished the delta today with some buds and caught Two six pounders and two twenty inchers and about two dozen shakers. Most fish that I saw caught where either shakers or 1 to 2 pounders. The lure of the day was a red and white Yo-zuri. I had the pleasure of meeting the NakedFisherman, and I also saw Mr. Wilson on the water. P.S. Why do people put the fish on the stringer and drag the fish as they are trolling? Is it like a trophy for others to see? Some one please shed some light because I just dont get it.

I brought my good friend Bill Bushey out to fish black bass yesterday. We didn't get skunked this time. We caught 17 legals and 3 shakers. Bill caught 6 legal were from 1lb to 2lbs. 10oz. He did very well for using a spinning rig in the tules and timber. My best were 5lbs. 3oz, 4lbs. 4oz, and 4lbs.2oz. My others ranged from 1lb to 2lbs 6oz. My best tip for catching a big one is to get out there and fish your jig, tube or worm slow. That's it! Good fishing' Jerry

Pastor Steve and I caught & released 12 legals to 11#, most 5-8#, lost 2, 6 undersized, had 6-8 hit/no stick, lost 12 tails. Steve had the hot stick today. 7 hours, 43 miles. Water 60.2#, semi-clear to clear; air 53-65*, sky partly cloudy to overcast; wind 2-14 mph, gusts to 20. Shallow trolled clown Yo-Zuris with a 6" Trick Worm shallow 140 back at 5 mph in 5-8 of water. We launched at Hogback and were trolling shortly after 7 a.m. We did not anticipate finding many fish so we decided to stay in an area where we lost 2 tails. We fished the same area all day, a first for us. This was also the most successful day weve had in the highest sustained winds weve fis
